COURSE DESCRIPTION

Online Basics mentors in netiquette, digital citizenship, online collaboration, social media use (Instagram and Facebook) with a purpose, and email as a tool to both inform and facilitate community.

Includes: creation of a simple podcast; collaboration via Google docs, Facebook, Instagram, flame wars and trolling; copying others on emails; and the value of drafting emails.

  • For Ages 12+
  • Course runs May 30–July 2
  • Four 45-minute facilitated video-conferences
  • 20 hours work over 4 weeks
  • Coursework needs to be completed by July 2 to receive credit or qualify as a completed prerequisite for future classes.

WHAT ABOUT ONLINE INTERMEDIATE?

You may register for Online Intermediate at a discounted rate through June 29. You are welcome to register for both Online Basics and Online Intermediate at the same time as long as the student successfully completes Online Basics before the start of Online Intermediate.

Pre-Assignment - Academy Orientation Course

  • Sign into your iccinc.org email and the academy classroom
  • Practice participating in discussions, completing quizzes and submitting assignments
  • Discover the course calendar, groups and resources

Week 1 Objectives - Classroom and Google Docs

  • Collaborate using Google Docs
  • Attribute an image
  • Explore netiquette 

Week 2 - Basics of Netiquette

  • Practice netiquette 
  • Practice emailing a peer and a community leader
  • Articulate the value of CCing others in email
  • Discuss drafting emails for feedback

Week 3 - Online Privacy

  • Seek guidance from a wise guide about online privacy
  • Explore the need and steps for online privacy
  • Discover different genres of social media
  • Overview the breadth of social media

Week 4 - Social Media

  • Articulate reasons for discretion on social media 
  • Discuss how one can communicate for Christ in a digital environment
  • Create a social media project displaying what you’ve learned
  • Practice seeking feedback online and learning from the feedback offered
